Leather Goods Made in Topanga
We love creating things with our hands. Leather crafting came naturally for us when we wanted to brach out from building custom adventure bicycles. Over the years we have grown larger in scale and we now make a variety of bags, totes, musettes, wallets, belts, just to name a few.
Our shop location has a big influence on the development of our leather goods. Topanga Canyon has always attracted creative minds and independent spirits to its small community since the 60's. The music scene of the 70's put Topanga on the map with artists such as Neil Young, Jim Morrison, Mick Fleetwood and Joni Mitchell who lived in or frequented Topanga. In fact, our shop cabin was once a jam sessions studio for Eagles and The Doors. Today, the creative energy continues to grow and has inspired us to become leather craftsmen in our own way.

What Is Leather?
Leather is a versatile natural material that comes from animal skin, also known as hide, and is processed by a tanner. Depending on the tanning process the skin is treated with, different types of leather is produced for different applications.
We source our hides from top tanneries around the country. We mostly work with top grain and full grain leather which are the highest grades for durability, strengh, and its unique characteristics.
Leather Crafting Tools
Running a bike shop for the last two decades has taught us that having the proper and also highest-quality tools really makes a difference in the final product whether it be a custom bicycle or a leather bag. We now have several industry-leading, professional-grade tools and machines to help us craft our leather goods. While some of these machines may cost a pretty penny to own, the quality and the longevity of the machines more than make up for it.
Leather frame bags are now availabe at the Outpost. We currently offer frame bag and top tube bag that are made with premium top grain leather from Hermann Oak Tannery, one of the oldest tanneries in America, for durability and strength. The sides are constructed of heavy-duty waxed canvas for extra support.
The framebag is sized based on various Surly bike models the Ogre, Bridge Club, Disc Trucker, Midnight Special, and Karate Monkey. If you have a custom size in mind please use the Custom Project Request Form to submit a request.
